Confirmation
“Confirmation is a
pastoral and education ministry of the church that helps
the baptized through Word and Sacrament to identify more
deeply with the Christian community and participate more
fully in its mission.”
The Confirmation Ministry Task
Force Report, ELCA, 1993
Program
Overview
Confirmation is a two-year program
beginning in the fall of seventh grade and concluding in
May of the eighth grade year. Special emphasis is given
to the Bible, Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, the
Lutheran Church, worship, and faith. Classes meet on
Sunday mornings from 10:15-11:15am from September
through May. Seventh and eighth graders meet with the
Pastor for a large group presentation and then break
into small groups for in-depth discussion with adult
leaders. Confirmands and their parents are expected to
attend worship on a regular basis. Students are also
expected to be involved in service within the church, as
well as in the community.
It is our goal to engage our young people in a
personal faith search. We do not attempt to be Bible
scholars. We do
attempt to guide our students in a manner that promotes self-discovery and
the development of an ongoing faith that is centered
in Jesus Christ. The Rite of Confirmation marks the completion of our
congregation’s two-year program of Confirmation
ministry. Eighth graders who
have completed all the requirements and are ready to publicly
profess the faith into which they
were baptized are confirmed on Pentecost Sunday.
What if a student enters the program
late?
Students are asked to enroll with their own
grade. Should they enter mid-term or beyond eighth grade, an
individualized
plan will be developed in cooperation with the parents, a lay instructor,
the pastor, and student.
