History - Building of Church - Age/Sex Demography

A small group of people, who had a vision for a church on the west side of West Allis, gathered at the Sedgwick-Hamm Tractor Equipment Company on Highway 100 on the third Sunday of Lent 1955.

Deciding to meet the challenge to build a church, they purchased a temporary house chapel on Root River Parkway and secured an adjacent seven acres for a future building on West Cleveland Ave.

On June 5, 1955, 76 charter members established Holy Trinity as their church. Sunday school began with children and staff totaling 38 persons. A mission pastor came to work with this enthusiastic congregation in September, 1955. In March, 1957, Reverend Charles Koester accepted a call from the congregation to serve as its first full-time pastor. Within the first year the church grew to 379 baptized members. At that time Pastor Koester made an appeal for a building fund and a committee was appointed.

Ground was broken September, 1960 for the first unit and educational wing on the site that Holy Trinity now sits. June 4, 1961 was celebrated as the Service of Entry.

Worship began in what is now the fellowship hall. Eight years later the sanctuary and other rooms were added to the eastern end. Another Service of Entry celebration took place on May 11, 1969. In 1988 the narthex was enlarged and more classrooms were added to the educational wing.

In 1997, the members of Holy Trinity recognized the growing needs of the congregation. Another building campaign began for sanctuary remodeling, a building addition, and purchases for and renovations to various areas of the church property. The added space created a new main entrance, office space, lounge, and library. The addition/remodeling project was completed in the summer of 2000.

The congregation of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, has a baptized membership of about 1050.  We are a mix of all ages.
